The Citizen Police 69 Manga Gets Live-Action Film

A live-action film adaptation of Kimio Yanagisawa's Shimin Police 69 (The Citizen Police 69) manga is in the works for a Spring 2011 release. The manga follows an average middle-aged company employee who gets chosen to become part of "Shimin Police 69," an anti-crime organization. 51-year-old Toshiya Sakai (Pyu to Fuku! Jaguar the Movie) plays his first lead film role as the man who finds himself in these extraordinary circumstances. 15-year-old Momoiro Clover idol group member Akari Hayami will play a girl who changes the fate of Sakai's character, and Saori Hara also has a role.

Director Ryūichi Honda (Dance Till Tomorrow, Cutie Honey The Live episodes) has been shooting the film from late August to early September. Yanagisawa serialized the manga from 2001 to 2006, and Bunkasha compiled and published two books volumes.

Yanagisawa's romance manga Aoki Honoo spawned a video anime in 1989. His salaryman action manga Tokumei Kakarichō Tadano Hitoshi (Special Mission Section Chief Hitoshi Tadano) also inspired four live-action television series and a film. That manga series spawned a spinoff manga called Tokumei Joshi Ana Namino Yōko (Special Mission Female Announcer Yōko Namino) about a female television announcer who doubles as a secret corporate agent, and the spinoff in turn inspired two films.

Priest, Under the Bridge×2, Love Live! Promos Streamed

The website Crackle has released a 149-second trailer for Scott Stewart's live-action film adaption of Min-Woo Hyung's Korean manhwa Priest this week. The film stars Paul Bettany as the titular priest who attempts to rescue his niece from vampires. Also starring in the film are Cam Gigandet, Maggie Q, Karl Urban, and Christopher Plummer. After three delays, the movie is now slated for release in 2D and stereoscopic 3D on May 13, 2011. Tokyopop announced at Comic-Con International in July that the movie's prequel comic Priest: Purgatory is available now on Apple's App Store. Tokyopop is also releasing Ghostface, another series from Hyung.

King Records' Starchild label has begun streaming a promotional video for the Arakawa Under the Bridge × Bridge television anime series on Friday. Similar to the initial promotional videos for the first Arakawa under the bridge series, this new video features the characters Hoshi and Village Chief but no actual animated footage. Also like the first series, the new series adapts Hikaru Nakamura's manga about the eccentric characters who live under Arakawa Bridge. The series will premiere in Japan in October.

Bandai Visual's Lantis label has begun streaming a 125-second "short" promotional video for the Love Live! project's "Bokura no Live Kimi to no Live" song on its YouTube channel. The school idol project comes from the anime studio Sunrise, Lantis, and ASCII Media Works' Dengeki G's Magazine. As a self-described "ultimate user-participation project," Love Live! will let its fans vote on the future of the idol characters. The song's CD single shipped in Japan in August with the full music video animated by Sunrise.

Range Murata Confirmed for Gonzo's 2011 TV anime

The anime studio Gonzo sent a book cover illustrated by Range Murata as a complimentary gift to stockholders this month, and the included letter explained that the cover's illustration is the original character design for a new anime planned for broadcast next year.

Gonzo began hiring new anime production staff members such as animation runners (the production coordinator job seen in Animation Runner Kuromi), one "international production operations assistant" ("fluency in English required, Chinese is a plus"), in-between animators ("must have enthusiasm"), production desk managers, and designers late last month.

Gonzo told ANN during March's Tokyo International Anime Fair (TAF) that it was developing a potential Spring 2011 project that would take advantage of the new stereoscopic 3D televisions now entering the marketplace. The studio also showcased four character design sheets for a new project in the works at the fair, although it did not specify at the time whether these designs were from the same Spring 2011 project.

Spice and Wolf Light Novel Series enter Final Story Arc

The wraparound jacket band and jacket blurb on the 15th volume of Isuna Hasekura's Spice and Wolf (Ōkami to Koshinryo) light novel series has confirmed this week that the series is "entering the final story arc at last." It has been seven months since ASCII Media Works' Dengeki Bunko shipped the 14th volume, and over four years since the first volume shipped in 2006. The 15th volume itself is not the final volume of the series; in fact, it is the first part of the "Taiyō no Kinka" storyline.

Spice and Wolf is the acclaimed novel series that avoids the usual sword-and-sorcery trappings of fantasy stories and focuses on how business (and religion) gets done in a medieval world — with a wolf girl. In the story, a peddler discovers a wolf girl who wants to return to her northern home after serving as a town's goddess of harvest for many years. The peddler strikes a deal to bring the wolf girl north, and she brings him both prosperity and unwanted attention from the church.

Yen Press will publish the third volume of the light novel series in December, and it published the second volume of Keito Koume's manga adaptation in July. Funimation licensed the two television anime series based on the light novel series.

The first .hack//Quantum volume will ship on January 28, 2011 with the first episode (about 25 minutes long) of the anime series, the planned bonus CG anime, several promotional videos, and footage from the related online TV project. However, there will be an early limited edition that will only be available (with a drama CD) at Bandai Visual's "Anime Fes. 'VS'" theater screenings this November. 'VS'" screenings this December. The third volume will then ship on March 25.
